McKinney Vento Educational Definition of Homelessness

The term "homeless children and youth" refers to any student living in either of the following circumstances:
A. Individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence and
B. Includes
- Children and youth who are sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or similar reasons.
- Children and youth who are living in a public or private place not designated for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodations for human beings.
- Children and youth living in cars, parks, pubic spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations or similar settings.
- Migratory children living in any of the above circumstances.
