ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ Alumni Spotlight

  • Meet Ashlee Martinez, a 2011 graduate of Galena Park High School. While a student in GPISD, she was a member of the National Honor Society, graduated top 10% of her high school class and was a member of her school’s varsity softball team.

Upon graduation, Ashlee decided to continue her higher education at the University of Houston’s Central Campus to obtain a degree in Liberal Studies. She chose UH because it is a well-known, respected Tier One research university. A few other reasons were their outstanding educational record, flexible financial aid options, and convenient location. She also wanted to attend college in Houston because she is extremely close to her family, plus she found the university to be more affordable. Ashlee selected Liberal Studies as her major because she plans to pursue a professional degree, such as nursing. She believes this path will provide her with the necessary, practical skills that will be applicable on the job and will help her become fully prepared.

Once she obtains her bachelor's degree in December of 2015 from UH, Ashlee plans to apply to the nursing program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston or the University of Texas Medical Branch. To attain these goals, she is currently studying for the HESI (Health Educational Systems Inc.) and TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills), so she can apply to nursing school this year. Passing these skills exams will be the first steps toward her nursing career goals, and she is determined to pass both tests. When she has completed the next level of training, Ashlee has set a goal to begin her nursing career in the medical center.

She has always been interested in the medical field, acknowledging she wants to be able to make a difference in the world. Ashlee explained that as a nurse, “You will see the value of life, when you see people fighting to stay alive.” She hopes she is able to make a significant impact on health care using her initiative and compassion.

Although Ashlee is busy with graduation approaching in the fall, studying for finals, and preparing for admissions assessment exams, she still manages to carve out time for family and a social life. She values time spent with her family and friends, as well as showing her Cougar pride by attending all UH football home games. Ashlee encourages students attending college in the fall to always study, stay on top of their assignments, and never procrastinate!

GPISD is very proud to call Ashlee a member of our family! We wish her the best of luck as she continues to reach her goals.  We know she will continue to make a positive impact on the lives of many with her compassion!
