Meet Gerardo Gonzales, a 2010 graduate of North Shore Senior High School. Immediately upon graduation from high school, Gerardo did not waste a moment as he enrolled in classes and immediately began working on his certification in Eye Care Technology at San Jacinto College. Gerardo and his wife, also a NSSHS graduate, chose to enroll in the program due to the many job opportunities available and the high demand. Because the program was hands on, which he enjoyed, completing the courses soon became his goal.
In May 2012, Gerardo was awarded his Associates Degree in Applied Science, and just a week later he gained employment in the medical center at Eye Excellence in the St. Luke’s Tower. While working there, he received his certification as an ophthalmic assistant. Gerardo currently works with an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) to provide patient care by performing many different eye-related clinical functions. He also assists ophthalmologists as they care for patients by taking histories, performing various procedures and tests, and preparing patients to see the doctor. His work provides the ophthalmologist with important information to help diagnose and treat patients. There are so many things Gerardo loves about his job, but the most interesting one is his opportunity to know and work for such a well-known doctor, Dr. Mary T. Green, M.D. He also enjoys learning about the different types of diseases that can affect the eyes.
Gerardo has decided to continue his higher education at San Jacinto College this summer and then transfer to the University of Houston to pursue his bachelor’s degree. During his free time, he enjoys fishing and spending time with his two children.
We wish Gerardo the best as he embarks on his next exciting adventure! He certainly has made GPISD proud!
